Cats Like Us Explores Jamestown, NY!

Posted Julie Ann Davis Lifestyle Local

Andrew and I like that Buffalo, NY is centrally located to take road trips. Last year we had planned a trip to Jamestown, NY, which is about an hour and a half south of Buffalo... and then pandemic hit! We decided to go last month, but I had the flu. They say, third times a charm right? Last week we finally ventured on our weekend getaway. Unfortunately some of the places we had originally planned to visit last year are now closed permanently or have not reopened yet, but we did hit the big name ones. "Why go to Jamestown?" Well...

Suffering From Elvis Disease? An Elvis Bust is Your Cure!

Posted Julie Ann Davis Art Crafts & home Halloween Lifestyle Local Tiki

I always say that Cats Like Us brings people together and I am very lucky to have met Derek Hendrickson one of the first days that Cats Like Us opened it's doors! He's the creator of Suffering From Elvis Disease, aka maker of satirical Elvis busts. About ten years ago we had him selling busts for an in-store event and I wanted to check in on him and see what's new in the world of Elvi, so here's a little interview... Can you explain why Elvis busts? Elvis, being the pop culture god that he was/is seemed like a rather easy target for...

Rockabilly Greg & Buffalo Music

Posted Julie Ann Davis Behind the scenes Lifestyle Local Music

When were you first interested in rockabilly music? I was born in the mid 60’s. Growing up in that era and I had access to all of the variety shows at the time that included artists like Glen Campbell, Mac Davis, Dean Martin, Johnny Cash, Sonny and Cher, Donnie and Marie, Hee Haw and many more. Many evenings were filled watching these programs and all of the great music segments. On Saturday mornings, after cartoons were over, American Bandstand and Soul Train came on. And, AM radio was popular, for the most part, and you could hear many different genres...

I knew the Buckminster Cat Cafe was opening soon, as the owner Molly stopped in my shop Cats Like Us last summer and we were in communication about cross promotion. Well they finally opened in November and our family holiday obligations calmed down, so we stopped in for a visit! It was awesome! We paired up for a little cross-promo too!

Chevygrrl Our Halloween Pinup!

Posted Julie Ann Davis Behind the scenes Halloween Lifestyle Local

The lovely lady featured in our Everyday is Halloween Collection banner is Chevygrrl. Known locally for founding the Nickel City Dolls and as an internationally published pinup, we decided to get to know her a little more! Photo: Sweet Heart Pinup What's the story behind your pinup name? My Name is Anjie, but in the pinup world I go by Chevygrrl. Back in 1995, I bought my first classic car, a 1972 Chevelle. Also around this time was the wonderful world of the AOL chatroom and I needed a handle. One of my customers at the bar I was working...

A Bucket of Blood and Popcorn if you Please!

Posted Julie Ann Davis Local

Bucket of Blood Ok, back to the movies. This week they showed Bucket of Blood and The Corpse Grinders as a double feature along with trailers for quite a few Grindhouse classics. What is “Grindhouse” you might ask? Well in a nutshell Grindhouse movies are exploitation films. Whether it’s slasher films, soft core porn, martial arts, or a little of all of them combined, they usually have low budgets and odd plot lines with strong cult followings. Bucket of Blood (1959) directed by Roger Corman, shot in five days, in my mind, is an amazing film. It combines...

The Weekender 2018

Posted Julie Ann Davis Lifestyle Local

This past weekend was so much fun and it's no wonder, I spent it with the Salt City Belles and beautiful retro and vintage styled ladies. I took a road trip to Syracuse, NY with some friends for The Weekender. What is The Weekender you might ask? Well it's an extended version of The Retro Ladies Day which I blogged about last year.  Friday night - I'm told - was a wild time spent at “The Speakeasy” with 1920s inspired fashion and drinks. I was still at work Friday night and drove out on the rainy Saturday morning with my...

Behind The Scenes at Sweet Heart Pinup Studio

Posted Andrea P Behind the scenes Local

Here at Cats Like Us, we enjoy having in store events that feature fellow business owners, artists, and musicians from Western New York. This February 3rd 2018 from 11am to 3:30pm we will have Destiny from Sweet Heart Pin Up Studio (located just down the street from Cats Like Us) joining us again in-store to book sessions and answer questions for prospective clients. She's easy to recommend -- a real pro and sweet heart herself!  We sat down with Destiny to learn more about her life, what inspires her, and how she approaches photography.   How long have you been a...
