The Story of Kitch Towels

Posted Julie Ann Davis Behind the scenes Local

A few weeks ago I was looking at our Kitch Towels in the shop and thought more people need to know how great these little towels are, so I contacted Erin, the gal behind the Kitch name and interviewed her. This is the story….   Who makes up Kitch Towels? Myself with help from my sweet husband! We have co-owned a screen printing shop in downtown Buffalo, NY (called Steamroller) for the past 11 years, and Kitch is an extension of that.   Where did the name come from? I wanted to convey a sense of my design aesthetic as...

The New England Shake-Up!

Posted Andrew Davis Lifestyle Local

Back in September we had the pleasure to attend the 2nd annual New England Shake-Up! in Sturbridge, MA, which is a music festival celebrating great music and style of the 50's. This is a quick roundup of our adventure, and most certainly does not capture how much fun we had! The location, attractions, and food! The event was located at The Sturbridge Host, a hotel and conference center located in Sturbridge MA, about a 6 hour drive from Cats Like Us in Buffalo, NY.   The entire event is located in or around the conference center, which was very convenient...

Main Street Still Exists: Small Town Shoppin

Posted Andrew Davis Local

Cats Like Us is located on Main Street in Tonawanda, NY, a northern suburb of Buffalo. It's not too big or too fancy, but this 2 block stretch is a slice right out of Americana. In a half mile of Main Street, USA you can find 3 clothing stores, 6 restaurants, a half dozen antique stores, thrift stores, liqueur stores and more. And to top it off it is right on the Erie canal, a historic and beautiful stretch of waterway that has recently seen some fantastic restoration. So if you're up for a day trip, Tonawanda is a nice...

Cats Like Us Enjoys Tiki in Toronto

Posted Julie Ann Davis Local Tiki

I often say one great thing about living in Buffalo, NY, is the close proximity to other larger cosmopolitan cities. We are within easy driving distance from Cleveland, OH, Pittsburgh, PA, and Toronto, Ontario (Canada) -- we actually have a lot of customers who drive in from Canada. The popularity of TIKI and Polynesian Pop culture seems to come in waves (pun intended) and we have lots of customers visiting from Toronto recently that have been raving about the new tiki bars and restaurants there. So as tikiphiles we decided to do our duty and investigate, and here is a quick account of our fun weekender! Our...

My Pinup Judge Experience

Posted Julie Ann Davis Lifestyle Local

So a funny thing happened recently, I was asked to be a “local celebrity” judge at a Pinup Contest. You might say “Julie Ann, I thought you were a feminist, how can you support such a thing?” Well let me tell you how this all started... Last year I was contacted by some dear friends of mine, Maggie and Steve. Steve helps run Cavalcade of Cars at the Hamburg Fairgrounds--sort of the kick off of car show season--and he wanted help organizing and changing the format of their Pinup Competition and for me to be a judge. The contest has...

Barbie K: The Mermaid Lady

Posted Julie Ann Davis Behind the scenes Local

What made you start recreating vintage plaster chalkware? The truth is I had searched some time for a reasonably priced set of vintage mermaids. Unfortunately I began my search right after the price of vintage chalkware went through the roof.  I remember one day at a local antique and flea market seeing a set at the end of a vendors table. Eager with anticipation I picked up the larger mermaid of the two and immediately fell in love with it. It was in good condition, the colors were neutral and the eyes were quite fetching. Then I found out...
