Behind the Scenes: Not All Sizes are Created Equal

Posted Julie Ann Davis Style

On a daily basis I explain to women that that the reason an item does or doesn’t fit well is based on so many different factors. Why is this the case? Unfortunately, there is no standard in the garment industry on size. One brand’s size small will be the same as another brand’s size large. This is the result of vanity sizing over the years. The example everyone always references is Marilyn Monroe. In the 1950s she wore a size 12 which was equivalent to a 26 inch waist. A vintage size 12, is the same as a modern size...

How Cats Like Us Measures Clothing: Part 1

Posted Julie Ann Davis Fashion Style

Running a retail store I have learned more than I ever thought I would about clothing. And there are some universal truths of clothing and shopping online. Over the past 5 years we have come to know many of the misconceptions and confusion about sizing clothing, and I am writing now about just that. Let's get a few things out of the way early...   I have no idea! Never having shopped for a dress (not that there is anything wrong with that) I most certainly don't really know what you ladies go through each time you enter that fitting...

Keeping with Cats Like Us Halloween tradition, we are offering you some kooky spooky costume ideas! We truly believe that thinking outside the 'big box' Halloween costume stores will give you a unique Halloween ensemble as well as piece's you can wear all year long!   I Love Lucy is an iconic 1950s television show and with a red wig paired with the Navy Nicky Polka Dot dress, you'll look like Lucille Ball! Add a crinoline like the Royal Blue Crinoline for extra fullness and the Beach Party Cat Eye Sunglasses in white.   Sometimes a dress just speaks for itself, but...

Vintage Halloween

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Halloween Style

The count down to Halloween is now 51 days and I just can't apologize for being super excited! The store is filled with kooky spooky fun, like the Moon Faces Spooksville Dress that are inspired by vintage Halloween art from the 1920s and beyond. As a retro lover, it's no surprise that we are all drawn to these wonderful images whether it's on clothing, tattoo art, the actual vintage decorations or reproductions. Black cats, witches and jack-o-lanterns, oh my!  One of the most iconic images is the black cat which appears on the Lucy Fur Vintage Cat Handbag (limited edition!) and...

Back to School!

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Fashion Style

Image: Pixabay Sometimes going back to school can be a drag, especially when (technically) Summer isn't over yet, but Cats Like Us can help chase those blues away. Whether you're a student, teacher or parent who is preparing (or already in full swing) for the new semester, we understand it can be a little tricky to 'switch gears'. So, we've put together some class appropriate retro ensembles that are most certainly 'Aces' all around. The Monroe Off the Shoulder Top paired with the Wine Country Plaid Haute Skirt makes for a great Autumn into Winter outfit, but if chilly shoulders or...

Summer's Not Over Yet!

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Fashion Style

Photo: Wikipedia Commons Even though Fall and Halloween items are appearing in stores and Starbucks' Pumpkin Spice Latte will soon be released, yet there is still plenty of Summer to go! Lots of time to visit the beach, grill up some grub or enjoy an outdoor Tiki gathering. Take a stroll in the woods or have a picnic, go to a carnival or enjoy an evening sipping a beer on the porch. Enjoy yourself! Cats Like Us is getting in lots of Halloween items, but we are still feeling summer-y with all the floral prints, nautical styles and bright colors...

Retro Fashion: Origins of the Peter Pan Collar

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Fashion Style

I am a huge fan of the Peter Pan collar and 1960s fashion, but I was always curious as to how the rounded collar got its name. Though very similar collars have been dated back since the 1640s, I wanted to know how my beloved crisp white collar was given it's name. Could it be.....  (Pictured above; Meow of Never Dress and Alice in Wonderland Dress) Named in direct relation to the fictional character we all know and love? Why yes, yes it was! The collar on the costume was named after actress Maude Adam's stage costume in her 1905 role...

Shapewear: The Taboo Underpinning

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Fashion Style

Wow, I can't believe it's been almost 5 years since I've written the blog, Get Your Shape In Shape! Crazy how times flies and yet (some things) stay the same. I'm still wearing my shapers and I still am still recommending them to all of you!  image source: Rago Shapewear Now, I want to clarify something. When Julie Ann and I recommend wearing a shaping garment under the retro clothing styles we carry at the store, IT DOES NOT MEAN WE ARE SAYING YOU ARE FAT! Oh goodness, we understand that body image and the way we all feel about...

Retro Style : Twin Peaks

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Fashion Style

When you say, "Twin Peaks" to people it usually conjures up images of Laura Palmer, Agent Copper and phrases like, "This is a damn fine cup of coffee". The late 80s cult TV show gained popularity due to David Lynch and Mark Frost's directing and writing, the wonderful cast of actors and the odd imagery and themes that were present throughout the show. There is no denying that Twin Peaks was a TV show that should have never been canceled. Something I enjoyed throughout the show is the 80s does 50s fashion that is pure nostalgic gold. The Audrey Horne character was...

Vintage Valentine Pinups

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Fashion Style

Anne Jeffreys With Valentine's Day right around the corner, I thought it would be fun to visit some glamorous pinup's of yesteryear. The wonderful sets, props and costuming, make these photos so lovely and kitschy too. I would be as bold to say that pinups are much better than chocolates, well maybe a close second. Hehe! Ann Miller  Barbara Bates    Marilyn Monroe   Rita Hayworth  Cyd Charisse     Love is in the air, but at Cats Like Us we love you all year around. *Wink* -Meagan Kyla
