Orange Hair!

Posted Julie Ann Davis Hair

So I've been dying parts of my hair for years now and decided to go a little more drastic--- I had all of my hair dyed completely bright orange. Originally I thought about going blue or Cats Like Us turquoise, but I felt that those colors are a little more high maintenance. Orange is close to red hair, and even if it fades it won't get too weird. Plus orange is my favorite color!     The Process In our years of being open I have met many talented stylists and colorists. For a project this big I decided to...

My Creepers Obsession

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Style

(Some creepers from my collection) I realize the title of this blog sounds a little odd, especially when you combine “creepers” and “obsession” together, by no means am I obsessed with people who are creepers! Hehe! Putting the silliness aside, I am writing about my love affair with the (brothel) creeper shoe style that was started over ten years ago.   I don't know exactly at what moment I really went nuts over the shoe style itself, but I do recall seeing a lot of 80s music artists rocking creepers along with Duckie Dale from the movie Pretty in Pink....

Dressing the 50s

Posted Julie Ann Davis Fashion Style

A recent visit to an estate sale turned up a fabulous little book published in 1953 entitled “The Clothes You Buy and Make”, by Caroline E. Wingo. Being a home sewer, I picked this up for the vintage sewing advice but it also contains a treasure trove of hair, makeup, and fashion tips for the mid-century diva. The title of Chapter 6 neatly summed up 1950s fashion sense for me “Plan Costumes – Not Dresses”. Now, they don’t mean a Halloween costume, they mean your ensemble. These women did not just throw on a dress, they dressed.   Part of what...

Retro Hair Styling : How To Fold A Bandana

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Hair Style

I wear a lot of bandana's in my hair and even when I'm not wearing one, I get asked, "How do you fold your bandana's?". I have done many mini tutorial's for our in-store customers, so here's something that I hope will help all of our wonderful customers! Step 1 : Lay bandana on a flat surface Step 2: Fold in half, corner to corner to create a triangle. Step 3: Fold the bottom point half way up the triangle.  Step 4: Fold up again as the band width should then be between 4-5 inches, depending on your preference. Step 5: Flip it...

Mens Retro Style: What To Wear With A Bowling Shirt

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Fashion Style

We often get asked, "What can I wear with a bowling/lounge shirt?", and one of the many wonderful things about this style is that it is extremely versatile! A bowling shirt or also known as a camp shirt or lounge shirt is, "loose, straight-cut, short-sleeved shirt or blouse with a simple placket front opening and a "camp collar" - a one-piece collar (no collar band) that can be worn open and spread or closed at the neck with a button and loop." A classic 1950s style for men, brands like Steady Clothing make this retro staple available in a variety of styles and sizes....

My First Pinup Experience Featuring Sweet Heart Pin Up Studio

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Behind the scenes Lifestyle Local

Sweetheart Pin Up Studio is located right down the street from Cats Like Us at 59 Main St. Tonwanda, NY 14150. I first came up with the idea of working with Destiny Rogowski on a blog with the idea of shedding some light on the pinup photography experience from both the model and the photographer perspective. I wanted to share some insight into what Destiny does and perhaps encourage people who may be hesitant stepping in front of the camera. Well, when Destiny suggested I be the model it sent a bit of shock my system. "I'm a stylist, I'm...

Cats Like Us Insider: His Vintage Touch

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson

photo: @slapback_nyc A few months back Tony Medina (His Vintage Touch) had posted on social media the announcement that there would be only one East Coast stop on his tour. Within a whopping forty-eight hours, tickets for the class were all snatched up by the die hard stylists and fans, yet Lauren (Julie Ann's hairstylist) managed to snag (after having to click the “refresh button” three times) one of the four remaining tickets! Shortly after the tickets were sold out, Tony Medina jumped on the opportunity to teach a second class the night before as a test run. This class had also sold out and...

Cats Like Us at Deco Fest

Posted Julie Ann Davis Behind the scenes Style

This past month Cats Like Us sponsored Deco Fest (http://www.deco-fest.com/) at the Buffalo Central Terminal and we tried to capture some nice photos of our customers who were swinging around in our clothes. The Buffalo Central Terminal Train Station is rich with Buffalo history and art deco architecture. Buffalo Central Terminal opened on June 22, 1929 and the grand opening included the Chamber of Commerce Gala, with 2,200 people attending. It was the largest event in Buffalo at that time. Sadly, the trains stopped running in 1979 and the building was abandoned. More than 30 years after closing the building...
