The First Annual Retro Ladies Day!

Posted Julie Ann Davis Behind the scenes Lifestyle Local Style

On Saturday May 27, 2017 I was lucky enough to attend the 1st Annual Retro Ladies Day held by the Salt City Belles and Beaus at the Barnes Hiscock Mansion in Syracuse, NY. Only a two and a half hour drive from Buffalo, Destiny from Sweet Heart Pinup (just up the street from Cats Like Us) and I felt it was a no-brainer to attend. After all, it would give us an excuse to wear fancy vintage hats and gloves. There was even a complimentary glass of champagne, hors d’oeuvres, and a swag bag from the Salt City ladies included in...

My First Pinup Experience Featuring Sweet Heart Pin Up Studio

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Behind the scenes Lifestyle Local

Sweetheart Pin Up Studio is located right down the street from Cats Like Us at 59 Main St. Tonwanda, NY 14150. I first came up with the idea of working with Destiny Rogowski on a blog with the idea of shedding some light on the pinup photography experience from both the model and the photographer perspective. I wanted to share some insight into what Destiny does and perhaps encourage people who may be hesitant stepping in front of the camera. Well, when Destiny suggested I be the model it sent a bit of shock my system. "I'm a stylist, I'm...

Cats Like Us at Deco Fest

Posted Julie Ann Davis Behind the scenes Style

This past month Cats Like Us sponsored Deco Fest (http://www.deco-fest.com/) at the Buffalo Central Terminal and we tried to capture some nice photos of our customers who were swinging around in our clothes. The Buffalo Central Terminal Train Station is rich with Buffalo history and art deco architecture. Buffalo Central Terminal opened on June 22, 1929 and the grand opening included the Chamber of Commerce Gala, with 2,200 people attending. It was the largest event in Buffalo at that time. Sadly, the trains stopped running in 1979 and the building was abandoned.   More than 30 years after closing the...

Kelvis: The Woman Behind the Sexy Photos

Posted Julie Ann Davis Behind the scenes

Between her running from photo shoot to photo shoot, launching her new hair flower retro accessory line "Hair Affair by Kelvis", planning her wedding, and her exclusive Retro Lovely Magazine model edition, she has little time but squeezed us in for an interview and we couldn’t be happier. Learn more about this Western New York native and you’re sure to fall in love with her just like we did! Let’s start at the beginning…What made you start modeling Kelvis? What do you like the most about it? The least? People have always said to me, "You should model."... but I never...

Cock Grease vs Layrite: Water Based Pomades

Posted Andrew Davis Behind the scenes Hair

Hello Ladies and Gents… Well mostly the Gents, the name is Jonny Pomade and I’m here to review.....well…Pomade. I would first like to say that I’m a Pomade Addict. I’ve been using the stuff for years and there’s no end in sight. For those who do not know what pomade is.. ..Wikipedia describes it as a “Waxy and Greasy substance used to style hair”. I’ll admit that’s a fairly dead on description. Pomade can be used to shape a persons hair into many different styles, most commonly the Pompadour.  I recently had the pleasure to try out two different water-based...

Preview: Vintage Suits by Mary

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Behind the scenes Fashion

As I sit here sipping my morning coffee it's hard to think of basking in the warm summer sun while lounging next to the pool with a tiki drink in hand, because it's January and I live on the snowy East Coast. Before I lament about the cold, ice and snow some more, there is hope! My beacon of hope is the Luau on the Lake in Lake George, NY that I will be attending in June. I booked my hotel room and now I'm on the hunt for some new garb to adorn myself while I get my tiki on....

Behind the Scenes: Confessions of a Non-Model

Posted Julie Ann Davis Behind the scenes

Hi everyone, I’m Julie Ann, the gal you see in the pictures on the Cats Like Us website and on the postcards in the red dress. I never intended to be the model for Cats Like Us. Afterall, I’ve never modeled as you can probably tell. People have told me I’m very photogenic and back when I was 15 years old JCPenney approached my mom and they wanted to know if I would model for their catalog. My mom asked me if I was interested and I said “no”. I guess if I had said “yes” my life would be...

The Cats of Cats Like Us

Posted Andrew Davis Behind the scenes Lifestyle Local

We get calls weekly from people a little confused about the name of our store. (I suppose we can’t blame people too much since “cats” is in the name). And to clarify if you were wondering, we do not sell cats or kittens, nor do we board them, and please don’t surrender your cats to us. But we do LOVE cats. You could call us cat people. You may be wondering how just two people can run a successful on-line store and full brick and mortar boutique. Well the truth is that there are several helpers behind the scenes!...

Behind the Scenes: Uniting the Gateway for the United Way of the Tonawandas Fashion Show

Posted Julie Ann Davis Behind the scenes Fashion Local

Cats Like Us is always up to support a cause we believe in and this one is right in our backyard. We were involved in a fashion show a few weeks ago where the proceeds went to support the United Way of the Tonawandas and it was held at the historic Riviera Theater. Pretty swanky. If you are local and have never been to the Riviera Theater, go. It is beautiful. This is what it looks like on the inside. It was built in 1926 and patterned in an Italian Renaissance style. More information on the Riviera can be found...
