Retro Movie Fashion : Grease

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Fashion Style

I have to admit I'm not crazy about musical's, but there is something about Grease that has my toes taping and me singing along. I think I may have seen Grease over a hundred-something times and find myself singing, "You're the one that I want", when no one else is around. Shhhh, don't tell! I think I'll always have Grease fever and will forever love watching the movie for the; dancing, one-liners and THE FASHION!  The Pink Ladies: T-Birds: Danny and Sandy: The Gang at the Dance: And last but not least, Sandy's iconic fashion make-over! *Movie fact: Olivia Newton-John had to...

Shopping Cents : Confessions of a Bargain Shopper

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Fashion Style

You know those people rummaging through the clearance rack, shopping sales, and using coupons at the cash out? Yep, that's me, I am a bargain shopper and proud of it. I love fashion and I like to get the most bang for my buck, so I can splurge on purchases from my golden list of “I want that”. Don't get me wrong, I'm not cheap, I don't buy items just because they are on sale for the sake of them being on sale. Keeping myself on a short leash while shopping sales, keeps my wallet happy and prevents my closet...

My Creepers Obsession

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Style

(Some creepers from my collection) I realize the title of this blog sounds a little odd, especially when you combine “creepers” and “obsession” together, by no means am I obsessed with people who are creepers! Hehe! Putting the silliness aside, I am writing about my love affair with the (brothel) creeper shoe style that was started over ten years ago.     I don't know exactly at what moment I really went nuts over the shoe style itself, but I do recall seeing a lot of 80s music artists rocking creepers along with Duckie Dale from the movie Pretty in...

Dressing the 50s

Posted Julie Ann Davis Fashion Style

A recent visit to an estate sale turned up a fabulous little book published in 1953 entitled “The Clothes You Buy and Make”, by Caroline E. Wingo. Being a home sewer, I picked this up for the vintage sewing advice but it also contains a treasure trove of hair, makeup, and fashion tips for the mid-century diva. The title of Chapter 6 neatly summed up 1950s fashion sense for me “Plan Costumes – Not Dresses”. Now, they don’t mean a Halloween costume, they mean your ensemble. These women did not just throw on a dress, they dressed. Image Source: “The...

Retro Hair Styling : How To Fold A Bandana

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Hair Style

I wear a lot of bandana's in my hair and even when I'm not wearing one, I get asked, "How do you fold your bandana's?". I have done many mini tutorial's for our in-store customers, so here's something that I hope will help all of our wonderful customers! Step 1 : Lay bandana on a flat surface Step 2: Fold in half, corner to corner to create a triangle. Step 3: Fold the bottom point half way up the triangle.  Step 4: Fold up again as the band width should then be between 4-5 inches, depending on your preference. Step 5: Flip it...

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Fashion Style

We often get asked, "What can I wear with a bowling/lounge shirt?", and one of the many wonderful things about this style is that it is extremely versatile! A bowling shirt or also known as a camp shirt or lounge shirt is, "loose, straight-cut, short-sleeved shirt or blouse with a simple placket front opening and a "camp collar" - a one-piece collar (no collar band) that can be worn open and spread or closed at the neck with a button and loop." A classic 1950s style for men, brands like Steady Clothing make this retro staple available in a variety of styles and sizes....

Cats Like Us at Deco Fest

Posted Julie Ann Davis Behind the scenes Style

This past month Cats Like Us sponsored Deco Fest (http://www.deco-fest.com/) at the Buffalo Central Terminal and we tried to capture some nice photos of our customers who were swinging around in our clothes. The Buffalo Central Terminal Train Station is rich with Buffalo history and art deco architecture. Buffalo Central Terminal opened on June 22, 1929 and the grand opening included the Chamber of Commerce Gala, with 2,200 people attending. It was the largest event in Buffalo at that time. Sadly, the trains stopped running in 1979 and the building was abandoned.   More than 30 years after closing the...

I love scarves because they are so versatile for an easy, vintage inspired old hollywood look. Retro Fashion: Customize Your Own Circle Skirt

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Fashion Style

We are very excited as we've restocked all our plain circle skirts in pink, red, black and (the not so plain) black & white polka dot. While I was restocking the sales floor with these awesomely versatile skirts, it got me thinking of all the customization options. With a little imagination, some fabric glue or machine/hand sewing, you can really make the circle you've always wanted (and at a great price too, plain color circle skirts are $38!!!), it's just that simple! Since the skirt is a perfect circle, you can lay the skirt flat out and evenly space the design...
