With the dawn of the Atomic Age in the late 1940s after the detonation of the first atomic bomb, the world was fascinated with nuclear technology and space. Following the post-war recovery, though the United States in the 1950s was a very prosperous and innovative time, it was also a time that people feared atomic attacks and the possibilty of a nuclear world war. While the atomic threat was real, Atomic Age themes were seen in movies such as; "The Day the Earth Stood Still", "Them" and "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms". We also saw atomic themes in home decor, clothing and jewelry, and in advertisements, all of which were inspired by the ever changing technology of the 1950s.
It's atomic print! Bold fabrics and colors, like the classic atomic burst and boomerang shapes are prints that we can still see being used in modern retro clothing designs. There is just something fun and kitschy about seeing little bursts of atomic-like patterns all over a dress, skirt or even a bathroom countertop!
