Like a lot of classic cocktails, there are a lot of variations and the Vodka Gimlet is no exception. The inspiration for finding this cocktail was due to a customer coming into the store looking to dress for a Mad Man style party, so I was pondering about what type of cocktails the characters on the show drink. I came across this Vodka Gimlet recipe on the AMC Mad Men page, but I decided to modify it a little to my taste seeing as there are a few variations that looked tasty to me.
Interesting facts:
- A description of the drink in 1928 read, "gin, a spot of lime and soda" (Gimlet's can be made with both vodka or gin)
- B Movie director Ed Wood's favorite drink is a vodka gimlet
- The Gimlet is rumored to be named after British Royal Navy Surgeon, Rear-Admiral Sir Thomas Gimlet KCB who allegedly gave this cocktail to sailors to introduce lime juice as anti-scurvy medication.
Ingredients: (Mad Men recipe)
1 1/2 oz. Vodka
3/4 oz. Lime juice
3-4 Lime wedges
*I add 1/2 tsp. agave syrup as other recipes call for Rosie's sweetened lime juice
Method:
Shake vodka and lime juice (andsweetner if you'd like) into ice filled cocktail shaker. Shake and strain into an ice-filled rocks with 3-4 lime slices. Garnish with a lime wedge and enjoy!
Simple and refreshing, it's a tasty classic summer cocktail!
Cheers!
