The New England Shake-Up!

Posted Andrew Davis Lifestyle Local

Back in September we had the pleasure to attend the 2nd annual New England Shake-Up! in Sturbridge, MA, which is a music festival celebrating great music and style of the 50's. This is a quick roundup of our adventure, and most certainly does not capture how much fun we had! The location, attractions, and food! The event was located at The Sturbridge Host, a hotel and conference center located in Sturbridge MA, about a 6 hour drive from Cats Like Us in Buffalo, NY.   The entire event is located in or around the conference center, which was very convenient...

Retro Cocktail Recipe : Trader Vic's 1944 Mai Tai

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Lifestyle Tiki

I have to say I am shocked to find that I haven't featured a Mai Tai on the blog! A Tiki lovin', cocktail sippin' gal like myself enjoys a good mai tai and my favorite recipe that I make at home is the Trader Vic's 1944 recipe. As Beachbum Berry writes, "A Mai Tai should not be red.  A Mai Tai should not be blue.  The Bum has been served Mai Tais in every color of the rainbow, and the time has come to put his foot down (a gesture that would have more impact were he not now lying...

Cherries : That Sweet and Sultry Fruit

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Fashion Style

What is sweet, sultry, wholesome, risqué, and red all over? Cherries! Cherries are a classic retro motif seen throughout pinup, rockabilly, and vintage lover circles all over. I attribute its duality of being sweet and sultry to its ability to effortlessly travel throughout these fashion and lifestyle groups. All in all, there is no question that cherries are some versatile fruits! I recently picked up two great items from Cats Like Us which embody this duality perfectly! The White Cherries Estelle Blouse by Heart of Haute is the perfect something sweet to add to your collection and become a staple in your...

Preview : Maui Tropical Fun By Hell Bunny Clothing

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Fashion Style

One of the many awesome things about working at Cats Like Us is getting to see all the wonderful items we carry at the store....and nabbing a few things for myself before it's available. Hehe! As soon as I laid my eyes on the Maui Tropical collection, my little Tiki heart skipped a beat!    I normally wouldn't go for a crop top, but pairing the Maui Tropical Tie Shirt Top and the Maui Tropical 50s Swing Shirt just seemed like a no brainer. This comfy cotton combo features reddish pink hibiscus flowers and palms leaves on a black background...

Tiki Road Trippin' in Ohio Part II

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Lifestyle Tiki

On to part two of my Tiki road trip in Ohio! After leaving Columbus we made our way to Cleveland to shop at Sweet Lorain (my most favorite vintage store in the world!) and spend the evening checking out Porco Lounge and Tiki Room.   We were greeted by our bartender who was enthusiastic and was eager to help us any questions about the menu. Our drinks were delicious (I lost count after the third one) and we even made some new friends (Hi Phil!), we certainly felt like we were hanging out at a friend's lounge with such a...

Mohawks and Side Cuts : A Vintage Hair Styling Guide

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Hair Style

Let's talk about hair! People are often surprised when they see my hair at weddings, dressy functions and swing dances, because I currently have a have a side cut (I'm growing out the other side of my mohawk) and I like to crimp and tease my hair, yet I also love to incorporate vintage hair styles into my look. If you're looking to give vintage styling a try for a a pin-up photo shoot, Viva Las Vegas or just to explore something new, I hope these tips and advice are useful!   If you're gal like me, who may have an...

Tiki Road Trippin' in Ohio Part I

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Tiki

At the end of March Derek and I were super excited to get-a-way for a small road trip to Columbus, Ohio and Cleveland, Ohio to visit the new Tiki bars that opened in both cities and to do some vintage shopping. It was a nice break from the crappy winter and indulge in one of our obsessions....Tiki!    Our trip started with my husband and I traveling from Buffalo to Columbus and our first stop was getting some lunch at Surly Girl Saloon. This is one of our favorite restaurant's in Columbus as not only is the food delicious, the...

Save the Blue Bathroom : Part 2

Posted Andrew Davis Lifestyle

Here is part 2 of 3 of our blue bathroom re-do. Please do read the other parts here: Save The Blue Bathroom Part 1 - Part 3 So the hunt was on to replace the sink, toilet, and tub with a blue one. We went to the ReUse stores and estate sales... Amazingly we ended up finding a matching toilet and sink, and sliding shower doors on Craigslist locally only a few blocks away! The Tub Next was the tub, but it was so SOLID – I think our 1950s era house was built around it. We had the idea...
