The First Annual Retro Ladies Day!

Posted Julie Ann Davis Behind the scenes Lifestyle Local Style

On Saturday May 27, 2017 I was lucky enough to attend the 1st Annual Retro Ladies Day held by the Salt City Belles and Beaus at the Barnes Hiscock Mansion in Syracuse, NY. Only a two and a half hour drive from Buffalo, Destiny from Sweet Heart Pinup (just up the street from Cats Like Us) and I felt it was a no-brainer to attend. After all, it would give us an excuse to wear fancy vintage hats and gloves. There was even a complimentary glass of champagne, hors d’oeuvres, and a swag bag from the Salt City ladies included in...

Day Trip: Rochester, NY for the Genesee Brewhouse

Posted Andrew Davis Beer Lifestyle Local

We never really considered ourselves big beer drinkers until the fairly recent boom of micro breweries. In almost any community we visit you can find one and they're usually unique and excellent in their own way. And it's a lot more fun once you figure out the differences in types of beers and generally what you like, and don't like. Our love affair with Genesee Years ago, we decided to do a very tongue in cheek blog and taste test for "retro" inspired beers (read that here). We tried oldies but goodies, with lots of retro history and attitude. For...

The Tunes of Tiki Tuesday

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Lifestyle Tiki

When we have a gathering for some tropical libations, we often get asked, "What are we listening too?!" To set the mood, we find ourselves putting on a few different artist's that embody the Polynesian Pop vibe. Music that transports us to a desert island, feeling the tropical breeze in our hair and the sunning ourselves on the sandy beach. Well, okay we're really just hanging out in our garage Tiki bar, but I'm trying to set the mood here, hahaha!!! Here are some of our favorite albums to listen to on a Tiki Tuesday or any day of...

Tiki Tuesday: Some of Our Favorite Luau Recipes

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Cocktails Lifestyle Tiki

Luau is a traditional Hawaiian party or feast that is usually accompanied by entertainment. Get a few free tunes for your next luau here.   Happy Tiki Tuesday! I wanted to share some of my favorite luau foods that I like to serve our guests when we are entertaining them in The Hut. There are a plethora of recipes to choose from (some versions are vegan and vegetarian), yet I like to keep things simple and tend to stick to the three major food groups; SPAM, pineapple and rum. Hahaha!!!    Spicy Avocado Dip-Recipe from the Retro Luau book by Richard...

Retro (Hair) Style: An Ode to the Beehive

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Hair Style

On June 10th 2016 the world mourned Margaret Vinci Heldt, the creator of the iconic beehive hairstyle. A woman who teased and volumized the hair world in the 1960s into new heights, taking inspiration from a conical black velvet fez hat! She describes the style as, "tall wrap-around crown, creating a circular silhouette with high-rise accents." I love that she notes, "I don't know how we could have done it without hair spray". The beehive took the world by storm and had women feeling taller, elegant and refined. Just think it was one of Modern Beauty Shop Magazine's (now Modern Salon) fashion editors...

What is Across Lots Millinery & Adornments?

Posted Julie Ann Davis

I was lucky enough to meet Monica as a customer at Cats Like Us. Then I found out she has a business making gorgeous hair accessories reminiscent of vintage Hollywood Glamour under the name Across Lots.  How did Across Lots start? I started Across Lots in 2013, during my last semester in college. I always wanted start an accessories business, and our senior project of showing our work in a gallery space was the perfect kick in the butt to get everything rolling. I studied Communication Design, so I showed not only the visual identity of the shop, but also...
