Retro (Hair) Style: An Ode to the Beehive

Posted Meagan Kyla Hendrickson Hair Style

Creator of the Beehive Margaret Vinci Heldt

On June 10th 2016 the world mourned Margaret Vinci Heldt, the creator of the iconic beehive hairstyle. A woman who teased and volumized the hair world in the 1960s into new heights, taking inspiration from a conical black velvet fez hat! She describes the style as, "tall wrap-around crown, creating a circular silhouette with high-rise accents." I love that she notes, "I don't know how we could have done it without hair spray". The beehive took the world by storm and had women feeling taller, elegant and refined. Just think it was one of Modern Beauty Shop Magazine's (now Modern Salon) fashion editors that put a bee brooch in the model's hair, hence coining the iconic hairstyle, Beehive!

Let's look at some famous ladies rockin' some famous beehive's....

Audrey Hepburn (Holly Golightly)-Breakfast at Tiffany's

Debbie Harry Hairspray

Debbie Harry (Velma Von Tussel)-Hairspray

That hair is the bomb...literally, they are putting a bomb in there!

Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson of the B-52's are known for their beehive hairstyles. The band took their name from the aircraft, who's nose cone resembles the conical hairstyle. (Interesting fact I did not know!)

Johanna Lumley (Patsy Stone) of the British TV show Ab Fab. Patsy is always pulling things out of her epic beehive hair!

1960s girl group's like, The Ronette's, were barely ever seen without their teased to the Gods beehive hairdo's.

Also would like to point out their amazing matching outfits!

Amy Winehouse took her hair inspiration from 60s girl groups and brought the vintage hairstyle back into the mainstream.

Divine (Dawn Davenport), Susan Walsh (Chicklette) and Cookie Mueller (Concetta) in the John Waters film, Female Troubles, all wearing there ratted out hair in beautiful bouffant beehive's. Just remember, good girls don't wear cha-cha heels! (Hehehe!)

Cherry Dollface has an awesome tutorial for a Mad Men inspired beehive. She always has such great and informative videos!

So, would you try out this iconic hairstyle? We suggest a good hairspray, teasing comb and lots of bobby pins. *Wink*
