Cock Grease vs Layrite: Water Based Pomades

Posted Andrew Davis Behind the scenes Hair

Hello Ladies and Gents… Well mostly the Gents, the name is Jonny Pomade and I’m here to review.....well…Pomade. I would first like to say that I’m a Pomade Addict. I’ve been using the stuff for years and there’s no end in sight. For those who do not know what pomade is.. ..Wikipedia describes it as a “Waxy and Greasy substance used to style hair”. I’ll admit that’s a fairly dead on description. Pomade can be used to shape a persons hair into many different styles, most commonly the Pompadour.  I recently had the pleasure to try out two different water-based pomades available from Cats Like Us.

This is the first time I’ve ever used a water-based pomade. I’ve used most of the popular brands of petroleum-based ones, such as Murrays, Dax, High Life and American Greaser Supply.

The first water-based pomade I tried out was Cock Grease XXX Hold Pomade. Usually when I check out new pomade I go right for what it smells like. I honestly can’t figure it out, sometimes it's fruity other times it has a charcoal like sent. It’s really a scent I’m not used too. It's very mild and not overly powerful like some other pomades. They suggest you dry your hair completely before using this product. Upon getting two fingertips of this stuff out of the container I noticed it was really tough. Took some working in and rolling it around my palms to break it up. It actually hurt a bit putting into my hair, but like they advertise, “Goes in Hard”. Once I worked it in I combed up my pomp with surprising ease. I really enjoyed how it held up while I combed and shaped. Throughout the day I like to check my hair and re-comb if it’s out of place. No need with this stuff. Every strand held in place all day. Even in high winds and driving with the windows down, it didn’t mess my hair up. The next morning I used normal shampoo to wash it out. My hair felt thin and stringy. I wasn’t too thrilled about that. It honestly felt a bit gross, so I washed my hair with “Pomade De-greasing Shampoo”, it did the trick and my hair felt normal. All and all I would definitely recommend this pomade to anyone. It's got a spot in my collection and my weekly rotation.

Up next is Layrite Super Hold. Layrite has a rich vanilla scent, very easy on the nose! Again like with Cock Grease, they recommend that you have dry hair when using the product. One main difference between Cock Grease and Layrite was that Layrite was very ease to get out of the container, much easier to work in my hair as well. At first I had a bit of a problem combing my hair right, but as the pomade “dried” it became stiffer and combing became much easier. The daily hold was comparable to Cock Grease. I did get caught in the rain briefly, which I thought would be the death of my hair. That wasn’t the fact. Layrite held right up without a problem. When washing it out I used the same “Pomade De-Greasing Shampoo” and it cleaned my hair without an issue.

Just like Cock Grease, I’ve added Layrite to my collection, but given a choice I’ll be using Cock Grease more often.

More reviews to follow in the future!
