Save The Blue Bathroom Part 1 - Part 3

So the hunt was on to replace the sink, toilet, and tub with a blue one. We went to the ReUse stores and estate sales... Amazingly we ended up finding a matching toilet and sink, and sliding shower doors on Craigslist locally only a few blocks away!

The Tub

Next was the tub, but it was so SOLID – I think our 1950s era house was built around it. We had the idea to have the tub refinished to match the toilet color. There is a local company that does refinishing, and it turned out to be a great idea!

The toilet and sink are made by Eljer, and a quick web search revealed that only a few shades of blue Eljer toilets were produced, and ours is “Twilight Blue”. The refinishing company even had ready color samples to match! We found a company that produces matching toilet seats too! http://www.plumbingsupply.com/toiletseats_eljer.html

Our replacement sink was a little worn, so we had it refinished as well as the tub. It was quick and cost just ~$600 for tub and sink, and best of all it was easy! The resurfacing process involves chemically cleaning the surface, and spraying on the enamel. They literally came in and in 4 hours were finished, and we could use it 24 hours later.

Shower doors

The final touch for the tub was the hard doors we also acquired with the toilet and sink. This bathroom did originally have hard shower doors - we know by the existing holes in the tile where the framing would be.

The framing for the sliding doors was actually cut to fit the old bathroom it was in, but the width of our tub area was about an inch wider!

Fortunately, an mdf board from Home Depot is about the right thickness, so I cut it to length, and screwed (and caulked) it to the wall, then the frame to it.

I was careful to keep the front side flush so it looks good from outside the shower.

From inside the width of the board is a little wide but it IS VERY WELL sealed!

Tub done! Next is to add a few final touches - the sink, lighting, and medicine cabinet... Please watch for the final installment of our epic blue bathroom re-do and thanks for reading!!
